Spokane, Washington is an eastern city in the state that sits along the Spokane River, and is populated by over 215,000 people. Spokane is located west of the Rocky Mountains foothills, ninety-two miles south of the United States of America-Canadian border, twenty miles from the Washington-Idaho border, and two-hundred eighty miles east of Seattle heading along the I-90. Spokane is known to be the "birthplace" of Father's Day and is nicknamed the Lilac City. The city has been named the cultural and economic center for Spokane Metropolitan Area along with two other areas. Spokane is the second largest city in Washington state. The town was settled in 1881 when the railroad was completed, though Native Spokane People had been inhabiting the land for documented time going back 8,000-13,000 years. It is the Spokane People who gave the town its name, meaning "children of the sun" in the Salishan language. Agriculture and the mining and timber industries were strongholds on the economy until the 1980s.
Five miles west of Spokane is the downtown hub where loads of businesses operate including several retail shops and restaurants. Museums, theaters, and cultural shows like the Spokane Symphony Orchestra entice homeowners to come out and appreciate the arts. Riverfront Park offers residents 100-acres of fun including a Skyride, a gondola lift, and a carousel. Manito Park and Botanical Gardens is a beautiful area to take a stroll surrounded by art and nature, and the Spokane Centennial River Trails permit 37-miles of hiking and walking paths to visitors. Industries and companies that aid in boosting the economy are manufacturing, clean technology, and health science works, along with digital media companies. Homeowners in Spokane have ample opportunities regarding employment as well as activities and attractions to see or participate in.
